Ford made the University varsity team and Fletcher did not. This infuriated Fletcher so beyond measure that when he encountered a Morphic Adaptation Unit and worked out its operation, Ford became the subject of his scheming. He kept the Unit in his dorm and it was simple to entice Ford over for a celebratory drink after curfew. He convinced Ford to retrieve refills he had placed in booth (diguised as the dorm room's closet.)
Fletcher closed the door to trap Ford inside and enacted his revenge: changing Ford into a female dwarf and removing his desire for free will. "Ford" would no longer exist: instead the freshly formed Felicia would live at her master's beck and call.
