Laurence literally drew the short stick in he and his buddies' Morphic Adaptation Unit-enabled pool.
They all provided 2 positive attributes / traits / skills and 2 handicaps / negative attributes / bad habits. Then they took turns drawing 4 sticks each from the pile and had to enter the MAU and change themselves according to their sticks and live with the results for the weekend.
Laurence's sticks flipped his sex (he decided to call himself "Florence" for the weekend,) shrunk him to 3 feet tall, made him exuberantly gay, and made it so any outer clothing felt very uncomfortable.
All of Florence's draws were from the "disadvantages" pile but she found happiness as a skimpily dressed, horny lesbian dwarf even when the MAU went inactive. Especially knowing she could have drawn Luke's combination: "sexy butt," "professional soccer skills," "hip disarticulation amputation," and "dick down to your knees."
