Grant was a stubborn bastard. So when he was abducted by aliens, he spent every waking moment trying to escape. (Who knows how he'd have travelled the millions of miles across the unforgiving vacuum if he'd ever made it that far…)
The aliens responded by incorporating his escape attempts into their experiments. First they tried swapping his brain into other abducted bodies. Grant still wanted to get home even if it was in a stranger's body. The unfamiliar proportions barely deterred him. Then they progressively removed his extremeties. Grant's progress would be recorded and analyzed with each change and then they'd modify his body even more.
At some point they determined that Grant's scientific value was depleted and returned to Earth to collected other subjects. Grant was left in the hunting club cabin where the aliens first found him.
