Moments before my time travel to the past, I noticed that the "butterfly buffer" connected to my tech. harness had lost power! This tachyon interrupt is supposed to make it so that on my journey, I could only possess a person as a passenger. If I could affect anything, I'd introduce a non-identity paradox. (Every action made would change the future - my origin - in such a way that the me-eventually-traveling-back-in-the-future would inevitably be a different person.)
The buffer was invented to protect the universe as we know it. (My mentor wryly reassured me of course that my memory of the world could very well already be the consequence of time travel changes.) Time travel therefore should be used purely for observation of the past. But my buffer wasn't active!
I looked down at my suddenly feminine hands in silent resignation. The fact that I was controlling this body instead of observing it meant my future was already destroyed. (I'm not laying in the tech. harness brain-dead or anything: that future and therefore future-me no longer exists/will exist.) Bah. To hell with it. I guess I'm here for good, so let's have some fun!
