I knew this would happen. And of course I didn't care at the time. I very literally was a different person then.
What you see is what most would call a droid - a sophisticated platform of synthetic materials engineered to work like any human would but with expandable sensor capabilities and is… how do I say this delicately… far more expendable. Right now I'm doing the first of increasingly toxic 'hazardous environment' testing. (I saved money by using the local sauna - why not?)
I knew that even with recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning, no collection of algorithms and datasets would yet rival the evolutionary marvel of human intelligence. But I didn't want to apply for ethical experimentation clearance. So instead of recruiting volunteers, I mapped my own mind instead.
I knew what it would mean for my copy too. I knew it wasn't going to be a "which one will I be?" question like most think after watching the movie The Prestige or playing the videogame Soma. From my "original" point-of-view, nothing would change. But there would be a "me" seeing it differently. From my current point of view, I went straight from my brain-copying session to the seat where I was activated. And every time a new "me-droid" is turned on, I would be condemning myself to knowing I did it to myself and I'll be at the mercy of my owner.
