Cassian's testicular cancer was discovered far too late for conventional medical response. It was an experimental and very extreme procedure that ended up saving his life and he was very grateful for the opportunity. But the nanites that attacked the cancer and converted his physiology seemed to exhibit a very serious bug.

The doctors & engineers assured him that the permanent damage the nanites were doing to him was slowing and the loss of his final limb would take months and then stop.
