Bobby caught an extreme variant of The Bug and passed out early into the changes. Medical scans suggest his loss of limbs was not due to The Bug, but rather his body's lack of available resources to make its other changes. (If he'd remained concious, he'd have been able to drink supplements designed for virus victims. Because he'd passed out, the virus ate his arms and legs to complete the job.)
The change in sex, skin color, and facial structure seemed minor to her, compared to her new stunted configuration. The daily challenges and her roommate Chuck's constant support kept Bobbi from spiraling into depression. (Wracked with the guilt of not being there in Bobby's time of need Chuck devoted a good portion of his time to taking care of Bobbi.)
Bobbi soon saw her roommate in a new light (and she never blamed him for his absence.) Romance bloomed.
